Malyutin Sergey Vasilievich

October 3, 2017

04.10.1859 – 06.12. 1937

Russian artist, architect, master of original Russian modernism Sergey Vasilyevich Malyutin was born in Moscow in the family of a manufacturer. In three years he remained an orphan and was brought up in his aunt in Voronezh. The exhibition of the Wanderers, held in Voronezh in the late 1870s, made an indelible impression on Sergei. Struck to the depths of his soul by painting, created by outstanding artists, Sergei Malyutin firmly decided to become a painter.

To fulfill his dream Sergei Malyutin returned to Moscow and enrolled in the School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied for three years. His teachers were V.E. Makovsky, I.M. Pryanishnikov, E.S. Sorokin.

The artist’s early work was very diverse. He wrote genre scenes, close to the style of the Wanderers, historical paintings, landscapes. In the nineties he actively engaged in scenography and decorative painting, participated in the design of productions in various theaters. For many years the main direction of the artist’s activity remained the book graphics: he created illustrations for the tales of A.S. Pushkin.

In 1900 Malyutin Sergey Vasilevich settles in Talashkino – the estate of Princess MK. Tenishevoy, showing great interest in folk art crafts. In the same year, the artist joined the association of artists “World of Art”, until 1903, Sergei Vasilievich directed art workshops. According to his sketches, the interior and exterior decoration of the buildings in the manor, Moscow and Smolensk were performed. In this his work, Sergei Vasilievich took as a basis images of folk art, avoiding blindly copying the traditions of folk art. It is not for nothing that the artist is considered the founder of the original Russian modern.

Sergei Malyutin is one of the active creators and propagandists of the “Russian style” in art. The first matryoshka, which appeared in Russia at the end of the XIX century, depicting a girl in a sarafan, a white apron, with a colorful headscarf and a black cock in her hands was painted according to the sketches of Sergei Malyutin.

In 1903, the artist returned to Moscow, joined the Union of Russian Artists and began teaching at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (worked 14 years before 1917). During this period the artist created many unique portraits of the Russian intelligentsia.

From 1918 to 1923 Sergei Malyutin taught at the Higher Artistic and Technical Workshops (VHUTEMAS). In 1922, the artist became one of the organizers of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AHRR). In 1927 he joined the artistic group “Union of Realist Artists”, where he was until 1931.

The artist died at the age of 78 in Moscow.

Vasilkovsky Sergey Ivanovich

October 13, 2017

19.10.1854 – 08.10.1917

Sergei Ivanovich Vasilkovsky – a bright representative of the Ukrainian national school of painting, which continued the traditions of the Wanderers.

He was born in the city of Izyum of the Kharkov province to the clerk’s family. The first skills in the visual arts, Sergei received in the Kharkov gymnasium, his teacher was Dmitry Bezperchy – a former serf, a student of Taras Shevchenko in the workshop of Karl Bryullov. After training in the gymnasium, at the request of his father, Vasilkovsky entered the Kharkov Veterinary School, where his studies were interrupted in 1873 due to financial difficulties.

From 1876 to 1885, Sergei Vasilkovsky studied at the Petersburg Academy of Arts in the landscape class at M.K. Klodt and V.D. Orlovsky. In 1883, traveling around Ukraine, Vasilkovsky created a number of famous landscapes, which allowed him to take part in the contest for a gold medal and in the All-Russian academic exhibition. For landscape sketches, in which he conveyed the picturesqueness of Ukrainian nature, Vasilkovsky received 5 silver and one small gold medal, and for the painting “On the Donets” (not preserved) – a large gold medal and the right to a foreign trip for professional perfection.

In March 1886 Vasilkovsky went abroad. Traveled to England, France, Spain, Italy, South Africa and Germany. There he got acquainted with the collections of art museums, perfected his skills, guided by the advice of V. Orlovsky and I. Pohitonov, who lived at that time in Paris, worked hard and exhibited his works in the Paris Salon.

Stay abroad has increased the desire to direct his talents to the development of the landscape genre. Vasilkovsky walked on foot along the Kharkiv and Poltava provinces, descending the Dnieper to Zaporozhye. During the travels he drew forests and meadows, rural huts and streets at different times of the year, with simple genre motifs that fit organically into nature – avoiding simplification, deepening the structure of images.

Highly appreciating creative independence, Vasilkovsky did not associate himself with membership in any associations and represented his works at exhibitions of various associations of Petersburg, Kharkov, and Kiev (the first personal exhibition of the artist was held in Kharkov in 1900).

Sergei Vasilkovsky left almost 3000 works, before his death, transferring half of them to the Kharkov Art Museum. Most of them died during the Great Patriotic War, and now in museums and private collections there are about 500 of his works.

In the collection of the Voronezh Regional Art Museum. I.N. Kramskoy stored several works of the artist. Among them, the work “At the fence”, which is a variant-repetition of the painting “Cossack and the Little Girl” (1894), located in the Kharkov State Museum of Fine Arts.
