On April 27 at 15:00 in the space of the small exhibition hall of the museum (3rd floor of the permanent exhibition), the exhibition of Meer Axelrod “The German Occupation”, provided by the Alexander Pechersky Memorial Foundation, will open.
On the opening day, from 15:00 to 16:00, admission to the exhibition is free.
The exhibition will feature 50 graphic works from Meer Axelrod’s cycle “The German Occupation”.
The main part of these works was created in 1942-1943 in Alma-Ata, where the artist worked on the scenery for the film by Sergei Eisenstein “Ivan the Terrible”. The horrors of war and the Holocaust, conversations with refugees from Poland and Belarus shocked him. One by one, he created dozens of paintings, drawings, sketches with the telling names “Execution”, “Executioners”, “Rapists”, “Hangers”. This series, for which Axelrod was called the “Goya of the XX century”, is not only a work of art, but also almost documentary evidence at the trial of history over Nazism. Until very recently, the existence of the cycle was not known even to specialists: the works were kept in the archive of the artist’s family and were not exhibited together.
The exhibited works reflect not only the horror of life in the territories occupied by the Nazis, but also the mass resistance movement, the exploits of partisans and underground workers. Among such works, the painting “Prisoner” is the only lifetime portrait of the leader of the legendary uprising in the Nazi death camp Sobibor Alexander Pechersky.
The collection presented at the exhibition is a unique artistic testimony to the martyrdom and heroism of the peoples of the USSR in the territories occupied by the Nazis.
The exhibition will last until May 21, 2023.
