Sergei Mikhailovich Romanovich is a Russian and Soviet artist, writer and philosopher.
Born in Zamoskvorechye, in the family of Mikhail Mikhailovich Romanovich, an inspector for the supervision of orphanages of the department of Empress Maria Feodorovna. Mother – Sofya Alexandrovna Nensberg, a Swedish father – was the first teacher of the future artist.
In 1909, Sergei entered the painting department of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, from which he graduated in 1918. There he studied with N. Kasatkin, A. Arkhipov, K. Korovin and other masters. Having made friends with Mikhail Larionov, in 1912-1914 he was a member of the art association “Radiators and Futures”, participated in their exhibitions. In 1914 he volunteered for the army.
In 1918-1920, he taught at the art studio of the Moscow Proletkult, in 1920-1928 (with interruptions) – in the Voronezh branch of the Higher Khutemas, in 1922-1923 – in the Moscow Higher Khutemas, since 1929 – at the workers’ faculty of arts, at the Architecture and Construction Institute, decorative department of the Moscow Higher Art and Industrial School (former Stroganov) “with interruptions.”
From 1921 to 1926 he was an active member of the Makovets association. In 1928 he joined the Society of Moscow Artists (OMH). In 1932 he was sent to the Russian North, in 1938 – to Central Asia, in 1938-1939 – to Azerbaijan. In 1935-1948 he worked in the workshop of monumental painting of the Academy of Architecture of the USSR. He performed a number of works in the genre of monumental painting.
The main part of the works created by the artist is devoted to ancient and Christian themes, which he developed throughout his life. After the war, he hardly exhibited his works, earning a living with monumental commissions. In 1995, the artist’s works were shown at his retrospective exhibition, in the Russian Museum (St. Petersburg), and then in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.
In 2003, the Tretyakov Gallery hosted a scientific conference dedicated to the artist’s work. Works by S.M. Romanovich were highly appreciated by art historians:
“Paintings and graphics by S.M. Romanovich is a wonderful art that should go to our best museums. I am sure that this will happen sooner or later” — Mikhail Alpatov.
The artist died in Moscow in November 1968. He was buried at the Danilovsky cemetery.
The artist’s works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Arts of the Republic of Karakalpakstan named after. I.V. Savitsky, in the museums of the cities of Voronezh, Smolensk, Saratov, Pavlovsk and private collections.
From March 6 to March 8, 2022 VOHM them. I.N. Kramskoy will take part in the all-Russian action “Cultural weekend”.

On February 24, 2022, a temporary exhibition “The Genius of Landscape Ivan Shishkin” was opened in the Talovsky District Museum of Local Lore, dedicated to the 190th anniversary of the birth of the famous Russian landscape painter, painter, draftsman and engraver-aquaphorist of the 19th century I.I. Shishkin (1832 – 1898).
The exhibition presents 40 etchings from the funds of the Voronezh Regional Art Museum. I.N. Kramskoy.
Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin was not only a talented painter, but also one of the best etchers of his time, a great connoisseur and experimenter in the field of printmaking. Shishkin’s etchings are the pinnacle of Russian engraving art, possessing rare artistic expressiveness. All the smallest nuances of the seasons, day and night, forests and fields, rivers and lakes are presented in the artist’s works in the context of the inextricable “natural life” of Russian people.
The exhibition will allow the modern viewer to see Russian nature as the great artist saw it, as well as enjoy the little-known works of the outstanding master, the best of which have become classics of national graphics.
The exhibition will run at the museum until April 29, 2022.

On March 13 and 27 at 12.00 the museum invites you to the master class “Collage in the spirit of Raphael”.
Do you want to go on a creative journey and work in the collage technique?
Collage is one of the most modern and interesting graphic techniques that gives a lot of creative freedom. Inspired by the works of the outstanding Renaissance artist Raphael Santi, who became one of the three titans of the Renaissance along with Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo Buonarroti, we will make an abstract collage. Learn how to create author’s colored paper with unique prints. In the process, we learn about collage as a technique with its techniques and “tricks”.
All materials are provided. Take your finished work with you.
The master class is conducted by artist Olga Remez.
Duration – 90 minutes.
