On November 10, the museum opened an exhibition of antique and modern dolls “The History of Beautiful Dolls”

November 11, 2022

In the space of the small exhibition hall of the museum, more than 100 exhibits appeared: antique beauties from the collection of Svetlana Pchelnikova and modern author’s dolls from Russian artists.

The exhibition was opened by Oksana Lepneva, head of the exposition and exhibition Department of the museum, and Svetlana Pchelnikova, artist, collector, philanthropist, laureate of the Russian Government Prize in the field of culture, curator of the exhibition. Svetlana noted that this exhibition is unique – collectible and modern author’s dolls are exhibited for the first time in one hall.  “Paying tribute to antique dolls, loving them, respecting, appreciating, protecting and preserving, we rethink them and go into the future, creating our own works of art.”  After the welcoming speeches, the guests visited an exciting curatorial tour.

Svetlana Pchelnikova herself told the guests about the antique dolls. Many dolls brought to Voronezh participate in the project to recreate dolls and toys of children of the imperial family “Royal Dolls”. For example, “A doll in the uniform of Grand Duchess Olga”, “A doll in the naval costume of Grand Duchess Anastasia” or a doll “Baby Olga”. After the exhibition, they will return to the exposition of the Alexander Palace (museum-reserve “Tsarskoye Selo”).

The modern author’s doll is a method of cognition of life both for those who create it and for those for whom it is created. Dolls created in the last decade occupy a significant place in the exposition of the exhibition. The artists themselves told the guests about the history of these dolls. The artist, the head of the porcelain manufactory Lyubov Fartushnaya (Krasnodar) told about the project “Renaissance of antique dolls”. The craftswoman together with her students creates original dolls in a modern interpretation, taking as a basis the legendary image of Bru dolls. The most striking exhibit of the collection is a 1.5–meter doll “Matryona” – the personification of Russia, in a magnificent kokoshnik and oblique to the waist.

The master from Kaluga Marina Ovcharenko presented the project “Angels among us”. This image was chosen for a reason: “Through an angel it is easier, easier to communicate with the viewer of any age and gender,” Marina Ovcharenko admitted.

Tatiana Veles, an artist from the city of Nadym (Yamalo–Nenets Autonomous Okrug), presented her work “Doll Princess Targaria and her Dragon”. “With my works I try to convey that there is no light without darkness in our life, the sun without the moon, good without evil. Everything should be nearby,” the artist told the guests.

A special place at the exhibition is occupied by the work of artists from Voronezh – Larisa Gutseva, Ivan the Terrible, Nikolai Pavlov. The creativity of these masters is well known to Voronezh residents – several times a year artists organize exhibitions of new works.

The exhibition “The History of Beautiful Dolls” will last until January 23, 2023.
