27.10.1886 – 01.10.1958

Robert Rafailovich Falk was born on October 27, 1886 in Moscow, in the family of a famous lawyer. Painting Robert Falk studied with such famous masters as KF. Yuon and II Mashkov, and in 1905 entered the course to Valentin Serov.

In 1910, the artist became one of the founders of the society “Jack of Diamonds”. “Bubnovovaletovtsy” departed from the traditions of academic and realistic painting, adhering to the ideas of post-impressionism and cubism. Artists of the group “Jack of Diamonds” were interested in a sculptural and plastic and picturesque solution, rather than an internal psychological or plot component.

From 1918 to 1928 years. Falk teaches at VKHUTEMAS-VHUTEIN, during this period the master’s painting becomes thinner, more complex. The canvases of the artist are saturated with a vibrating, as if moving color.

The legacy of the painter has a large number of portraits. Falk always took great interest in his models, talked with them a lot to uncover the psychological portrait of a man, and then reproduce it on canvas or paper. The artist was attracted by unusual, bright personalities, often he wrote people of different ethnicity.

In the Voronezh Regional Art Museum. I.N. Kramskoy is the work “Mulatka (Amra)”, made in pastel and is more of a sketchy character, but the portrait features and the character of the model are noted quite accurately. Acquaintance of the artist with the model – the daughter of the circus artist Amro happened in 1918 in Moscow, then the artist created her first portrait (is in the State Russian Museum). In 1928, Falk left for Paris, where the next meeting of the artist and Amra took place, which by that time was a well-known model that posited many artists.

In 1937, returning to the USSR, Falk discovered that the creative atmosphere had radically changed. The artist’s paintings were not bought, the struggle against “formalism” rejected all kinds of creative searches.

During the war, Falk worked in Bashkiria and Central Asia, in Samarkand.

Robert Rafailovich Falk died on October 1, 1958, without receiving recognition in Soviet Russia.
