On September 21, the museum will open an exhibition from the series “Discovering Funds”, which will present watercolors and graphic drawings by a marine painter, a brilliant master of landscape and sea battle scenes, one of the most prominent Russian painters, a European-famous master of the second half of the 19th century, Alexei Petrovich Bogolyubov ( 1824–1896).

The author of large battle paintings and fine landscape sketches, was born on March 28, 1824 in the village of Pomerania, Novgorod province. At the age of seventeen, in the rank of midshipman and adjutant position, Alexei Bogolyubov was preparing to devote himself to service in the navy, went on foreign voyages. For several years he combined naval service with studies in the landscape class of the Imperial Academy of Arts. Having retired at the end of the full course of the Academy with the Big Gold Medal, at the end of April 1854 A.P. Bogolyubov, as a “pensioner” of the Academy of Arts, went to study art abroad.

For six years he traveled around Europe: Switzerland, Holland, Italy, which opened to him the great art of the old masters of the Renaissance. He studied with the masters of the French and German seascape – he worked in the studios of Eugene Isabey in Paris and Andrea Achenbach in Düsseldorf. A revolution in the artistic views of Bogolyubov was the acquaintance and rapprochement with representatives of French realistic painting, which prepared impressionism – Ingres, Delaroche, Corot, Daubigny, the “Barbizon” Rousseau, Millet and others.

The poetry of real life has become the main content of the works of A.P. Bogolyubov. A bright personality allowed him not to turn into an imitator of outstanding European masters. Having mastered the new principles of the French school, he implemented them in his own way. The fruits of the artist’s labors found approval and support among European painters and were highly appreciated at home.

During his long life, A.P. Bogolyubov created about 3 thousand works (paintings, watercolors, drawings), many of which are kept in the largest museums in Russia and abroad.

The visit to the exhibition is carried out with a ticket for the permanent exhibition of the museum.

The exhibition will run until December 4, 2022.
