March 18 at the Voronezh Regional Art Museum. I.N. Kramskoy will open the exhibition “Lonely walk / Promenade solitaire”, which will present paintings and graphics by P.A. Nilus from the collection of VOHM them. I.N. Kramskoy.

The Voronezh Museum houses the largest collection of works by Pyotr Nilus (1869–1943), donated to the hometown of the artist’s closest friend I.A. Bunin in 1995. All these works were performed by the painter during his emigration to France (1923-1943).

P.A. Nilus is a graduate of the Odessa Drawing School, for a year he was a student of I.E. Repin, joining the Association of South Russian Artists, and then the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions. At the turn of the XIX – XX centuries, P. Nilus managed to declare himself as a bright, original artist. He successively went through the periods of “wandering”, “romanticism”, carried away by the imagery of the 1830s – 1860s, he called his works in this style “crinolines”. Already in exile, the painter creatively rethought impressionism and the discoveries of the so-called. Parisian school. In France, P.A. Nilus, as an artist, freed himself from “literaryness”, the need for a story in his works, appreciating only painting itself, weightless poetry. It was here that Nilus created a series of still lifes on a table dominated by shades of white. None of his works of this genre is oversaturated with unnecessary objects, each is extremely rich in pictorial nuances, elegant, not accidental and characterizes the aristocracy of everyday life, despite all the constraint of means.

The artist left a pictorial and epistolary legacy. In addition to Russian collections, the artist’s works are kept in the Louvre and other museums in France, in the National Art Gallery in Sofia, in the collection of Georgetown University in Washington.

The exposition will feature more than 50 works of painting and graphics, as well as personal belongings of P.A. Nilus from the collection of the Voronezh Regional Art Museum. I.N. Kramskoy.

The exhibition will run until April 17, 2022.
