On May 19, as part of the lecture series “Palette of Faust”, which started earlier this year, the lecture “El Greco: Crete, Venice, Toledo” was held.

The lecturer was the senior museum researcher Valery Shakin.

Listeners learned about the life and work of the last of the Titans of the Renaissance – Domenikos Theotokopoulos, nicknamed El Greco. A native of the island of Crete, the heir to the iconographic traditions and a humanistically educated person, El Greco, created his own artistic language. Byzantine spirituality coexisted here with the delights of Venetian colorism, and the exaltation of Roman mannerism with genuine Spanish affectation. The art of El Greco burst into the Spanish artistic tradition swiftly and imperiously, turned out to be only a bright flash and quickly forgotten. The artist, who did not leave behind worthy followers during his lifetime, gained them, influencing Delacroix, Manet, Cezanne, Picasso, Jackson Pollack.

The next lecture “Spanish medieval painting of the XIV-XV centuries.” Will be held in September 2019.
