Georgiy Ryazhsky is a Russian painter, Honored Artist of Russia, member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, member of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia.

Georgiy Ryazhsky was born in the village of Ignatyev, Moscow province, in the family of a peasant. His first art education was in the drawing class of the Moscow Prechisten evening classes for workers. Among the artists, these courses were called the People’s Academy of Arts, since they allowed young men and girls from the common people to become art workers.

In the first world war, Ryazhsky was drafted into the army. After demobilization, Ryazhsky worked in parts of the Red Army, wrote posters, made out revolutionary festivities. For some time he studied under K. Malevich in the State Free Art Workshops, reorganized in VHUTEMAS.

In 1923, Ryazhsky joined the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (AHRR, since 1928 – AXR: Association of Artists of the Revolution). The artist took an active part in the struggle to implement the slogan of the Association “Art – to the masses!”. As a Communist artist, as a principled public figure, he enjoyed great authority. His best works, created at the turn of the twenties and thirties, entered the history of Soviet art as historical documents of the era.

Most of all, Ryazhsky’s talent manifested itself in the portrait genre. The main theme of his work was the Soviet woman as an active builder of socialism. Thanks to his works: “Rabfakovka”, “Pechatnitsa”, “Delegate”, “Chairwoman”, “Tractor driver”, “Teacher”, “Skier”, “Zheleznodorozhnitsa”, a new image of a Soviet female citizen entered the history of Soviet art. In all these portraits, the artist shows the character of a Soviet woman, her active role in the public life of the country.

A.E. Arkhipov, who closely followed the successes of the youth, repeatedly noted the female portraits of Ryazhsky, saying at the same time:

“I see in my own way, and I have other tasks, and Ryazhsky is right. He has modern women. ”

Georgy Ryazhsky took part in a number of international exhibitions. In 1938, his paintings “Delegate” and “Chairman” received an honorable award – a great gold medal at the International Exhibition in Paris.

His works are in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Kiev Museum of Russian Art; Rostov Museum of Fine Arts and other collections.
