July 13, 2018 in the Lipetsk regional art Museum was the opening of the exhibition “Other art: where to get the armor and shield”, which were presented paintings and drawings from the funds of the VOKHM them. I. N. Kramskoy.

The exhibition consisted of 42 works by Soviet masters, whose desire for artistic experiments was stronger than the fear of being misunderstood and unrecognized. Many worked for themselves, “in the table”, while being part of the Union of artists. Some of the masters had state awards.

The time frame of the exhibition is determined by the 1930s, because it was then that the state apparatus finally banned any form of artistic dissent, and the 1980s, when the prohibitions against artists were actively destroyed. It was during this period that Soviet art was divided into: official (artists following the path of socialist realism) and unofficial (non-conformist art, characterized by bold creative search, work with different themes and forms).

Today, among many researchers there is an opinion that unofficial art appeared in the USSR in the early 1960s. This is partly true, but in many ways its appearance is due to those artists that have carried through the years an oral history of avant-garde and available in the early XX century art associations is A. V. Fonvizin, N. M. Chernyshev, S. M. Romanovich, V. A.’s Milashevsky. They met the revolution at a conscious age and were personally familiar with many avant-garde artists and experienced a sharp change in the “course of the party” in the 1930s, already, as Mature artists, passed on the spirit of their knowledge to students.

The exhibition reflects the artistic methods and the search for different masters of fine arts, the impact of their work on each other, both visual and intellectual. Their works are those “shield and armor” against ideological pressure and personal creative strategies of behavior at different times of the Soviet Union.
